Rest timer

The one you'll use most. Set it after each working set and let it hold you honest — rest periods have a strong tendency to stretch when you're not watching, and a session that should take 50 minutes becomes 80. Two to five minutes for heavy compounds, 60 to 120 seconds for accessories.

EMOM

Every Minute On the Minute. You start a set when the clock strikes and rest for whatever time is left. Because the interval is fixed and your set speed isn't, fatigue automatically shrinks your rest — the work gets harder without the weight changing. It's excellent for conditioning, technique work at moderate loads, and getting volume done in a fixed window.

Tabata

Twenty seconds on, ten seconds off, eight rounds. Four minutes. The protocol comes from research on high-intensity interval training in trained athletes, and the finding depends entirely on the work intervals being all-out. Done at a comfortable pace it's just a four-minute circuit — which is fine, it's simply not what the study measured.

AMRAP

As Many Rounds As Possible — a count-down clock against a fixed time cap, used for conditioning finishers and circuit work where the score is how much you got through.

Why rest length matters more than people think

Rest is the most-skipped variable in training and one of the more consequential. Between sets, two things recover on different timescales: the phosphocreatine that fuels short maximal efforts comes back over roughly three minutes, while your nervous system's readiness takes longer still. Cut rest short and the next set is limited by incomplete recovery rather than by the muscle you're trying to train.

The practical consequence is straightforward. Cutting rest from three minutes to one on a heavy squat might cost you two reps per set — across five sets, that's ten reps of work you didn't do. Over a training block, that's the difference between progress and maintenance.

The counter-argument is time, and it's a real one. If a session has to fit in 45 minutes, supersetting unrelated movements — a lower-body compound with an upper-body accessory — keeps rest long for each individual exercise while cutting total time. That's a better trade than uniformly rushing everything.

Does the timer keep running if I lock my phone?

The timer requests a screen wake lock while it runs, so on supported browsers the screen stays on. If your browser doesn't support it or you deny the request, the timer still runs — it's calculated from timestamps rather than counted tick by tick, so it stays accurate even in a backgrounded tab.
