The RPE scale, in reps
Modern strength training uses RPE as a proxy for proximity to failure, which makes it concrete rather than a feeling:

How the conversion works
The chart above rests on one observation: a set taken to a given proximity of failure is the same intensity regardless of how you got there. Three reps at RPE 8 leaves two in the tank, which makes it a five-rep-max effort — so it sits at the same percentage as a set of five taken to RPE 10. Add your reps and your reps in reserve together, and you get the number that actually determines the percentage.
That's why the published RPE chart looks like one curve read at an offset, and why this calculator stores it as a single curve rather than a grid: fewer numbers to get wrong. Half-point RPEs sit between two neighbouring entries and are interpolated.
Programming with RPE
A typical prescription is written as reps and a target RPE — "4 × 3 @ RPE 8" — and you pick the weight that produces that effort on the day. Some useful anchors:
- RPE 6–7 — technique work, speed work, warm-up primers.
- RPE 7–8 — the bulk of productive volume. Hard, repeatable, recoverable.
- RPE 8–9 — top sets and overload work, used sparingly.
- RPE 9.5–10 — testing and competition. Expensive to recover from.
Most training should sit at RPE 7–8. Sets past RPE 9 add disproportionate fatigue for very little extra stimulus, which is the same reasonwarm-up sets never approach failure.
Getting better at rating it
Accuracy is trainable, and the fastest way to build it is to occasionally test your rating: call the RPE, then keep going to actual failure and count how many extra reps you got. Most people discover they were two reps off in their first few attempts. Bar speed is the other reliable cue — the rep where speed noticeably drops is usually two or three from failure.
