How strength standards work
Strength standards express a lift as a multiple of bodyweight, then bucket those multiples into levels from untrained to elite. The logic is that bodyweight is the single biggest predictor of how much someone can lift — a 100 kg lifter benching 100 kg and a 60 kg lifter benching 100 kg have not done the same thing, and the second one is far more impressive.
The levels describe training history rather than genetics:
- Untrained — a healthy adult who has never trained the movement.
- Novice — a few months in, still adding weight most weeks.
- Intermediate — a year or two of real training. Stronger than nearly everyone in a commercial gym.
- Advanced — years of focused work. Competitive locally.
- Elite — a small fraction of people who train seriously ever get here.
Where the bodyweight-multiple model breaks
Strength scales with cross-sectional area while bodyweight scales with volume, so bigger lifters lift more in absolute terms and less relative to their size. A pure ratio flatters heavy lifters at the low end and punishes them at the top. It also ignores limb proportions — a lifter with long femurs and a short torso is fighting a genuinely harder squat, and no bodyweight multiple accounts for that.
Age is missing too. Peak strength for most people sits somewhere in their late twenties to mid-thirties, and standards written without an age adjustment quietly compare a 55-year-old to their own younger self.
None of that makes the exercise useless — it makes it a rough map rather than a verdict. If you want a sharper comparison, the powerlifting scoring formulas (Wilks, DOTS, IPF GL) correct for bodyweight non-linearly and are the right tool for ranking lifters against each other.
What to do with the answer
The useful reading isn't the level you're at, it's the gap between your lifts. Most people have one lift a level ahead of the others — commonly a deadlift that's outgrown a squat, or a bench that's stalled while everything else moved. That imbalance is a much more actionable piece of information than the label: it tells you where the next block of training should point.
